Skills of non-contact sports (swimming):

Swimming is keeping and propelling the body in water by the action of the arms and legs, using the following methods or strokes.

  1. The crawl or freestyle
  2. The backstroke
  3. Breast stroke
  4. The butterfly/dolphin movement
  5. The sidestroke.

In each skill there is a difference in the start, arm and leg action, breathing method, turning and finish.

The front crawl or free style is the fastest and most efficient stroke. The swimmer swims in a prone position with the arms alternately propelling the body forward. The leg action is also alternate, with legs thrashing water as they extend with the knees slightly bent. The swimmer breath as the head is tilted to either left or right during arm propulsion and breathes out slowly while the head is in water.

The Backstroke:- The swimmer swims lying on the back looking up. Arm movement is also alternate backwards. The leg action uses flutter kicks as in the crawl. It is complete opposite of the crawl breathing is easy as the swimmer face upwards.

Breast Stroke: This is the easiest and most relaxing stroke. To execute the breast stroke, the arms and legs must work in unison and remain parallel to the surface of the water throughout the strokes. The swimmer breaths as the head and chest clear the surface of the water.

Butterfly Stroke: The butterfly stroke is also called dolphin stroke because the movement is undulating, like a swimming dolphin. This stroke requires much strength and flexibility, particularly at the shoulder and torso. It is performed in a prone position. The act is like the front crawl, except that the arm, trunk and legs move at the same time as in dolphin.

The Side Stroke: This is the slowest of all swimming stroke. The stroke propulsion comes mainly from the legs in a movement called scissors kick, because the legs are brought together powerfully like a pair of scissors. The arm provide propulsion to stabilize the body on it’s side.
